More on that later, however.

I've been working on how I'm going to recreate the make up look. I found one fairly helpful YouTube video that gives good suggestions for the eye but I thought the lip (in the video was too pink and not fuchsia enough) I came up with a quick round up of products for the look:

MAC eyeshadow in carbon $14.50, MAC eyeshadow in deep truth (shown in the Shadowy Lady quad for $36), Shephora collection kohl pencil in black $8, NARS lipstick in funny face $24 and OPI nail polish in alpine snow. $4.25

I think the hardest part is going to be finding a fuchsia lipstick that doesn't look awful on me. As a general rule I don't wear pink lipsticks- I have redish brown hair and brown eyes and in combination with a pink I look washed out. Especially a fuchsia pink. HOWEVER- for the costume I will be purchasing a yellow/blonde wig! Which will help with the hair-color versus the lipstick issue.

Lady Gaga wig blonde/yellow $13.50

This wig looks pretty shitty but I'll have a hat on over it so I guess I don't really need to worry about the scalp.

The blonde/yellow hair has always been my favorite Lady Gaga hair look. She is currently wearing it like that for her Monster Ball tour. It's so cartoon-like, I love it. If I had blonde hair and money for great extensions I would totally get this done.

PUTTING TOGETHER A BEDROOM PT. 2

You can't hate IKEA. You can't not LOVE IKEA. I love IKEA. And because I love IKEA, I bought a bed from IKEA. To be more specific, I bought a MALM.

Supposedly the MALM bedroom collection is so hot these days, at least in the design world. My sister has a full and I fell in love with its simplicity and platform-esque style.

Here are what a few people interviews on Design*Sponge are saying:

"loving, loving, loving my malm bed from ikea" -Barb Blair of Knack Studios

"I love my bed! We recently upgraded to a king since I’m pregnant and need my space. The Malm series from IKEA is simple, modern and not expensive at all." -Shay Ometz of Fossil

"Our bed is the ever famous MALM, but we changed it up by building a sofa table of sorts behind the headboard and repurposing the drawers from the MALM bedside tables." -Christie Chase

(Michelle Armas)

I bought the black-brown version (the same color as my sister's) and I have a feeling I'm going to be content with it for awhile. The color makes it capable of working in nearly any room and the style as well- very simple. It also can work well with multiple design aesthetics in the event that mine changes, which it likely will.

My parents both have various pieces of furniture that each of them has had since their days in Manhattan- that's 3000+ miles of travel, four apartments, two houses and probably close to 25 years. Such as my dad's platform bed that does not continue to be "timeless" so much as it continues to be extremely versatile. Without a headboard you are allowed many options.

My next endeavor will be bedding. I hunted around at IKEA but nothing caught my eye. I don't want to pay a fortune, especially because I intend to buy a queen-sized down comforter. I don't fool around when it comes to that. While I'm not the busiest girl in the world, cabin vacations (no matter how short) are the most relaxing vacations.

I love hiking and I definitely don't mind hotels, but there is something about driving up to a lake and not having to worry about the rest of civilization while REMAINING in civilization that I just love.

Cabins are cozy and warm and yet kitschy. At least mine would be. I dream of someday owning a cabin of my own on some lake somewhere. It hardly matters where.

The best part about a cabin aside from its location is its decor. See some lovely cabin photos below as taken from Apartment Therapy

Stockholm, Sweden

Virginia

Echo Park, Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles, California

Colorado

Elkhorn, Wisconsin

Wandawega Lake, Wisconsin

HUNTING DOWN BEAUTIFUL BOOTS

I saw some of these boots while on Bainbridge Island with some lovely ladies from my favorite LJ community, including Katt. We camped on the coast too and I got to witness the highest and lowest tides and everything in between. It's amazing how different they can be. There is so much life in that water and when the tide goes out you can see it. You walk around on the rocks and stop for a minute and listen to the crabs scuttling away. It's so energetic and full of vitality but also so vulnerable to sun, feet, birds and more. When the tide comes in it is like a safety blanket and the creatures are safe again, at least from the world on land.

The textures were amazing and colors were otherworldly. I love tide pools and the ocean and the Olympic Peninsula in general. Here are some of my favorite photos from the trip.

DAY DREAMING OF SUN

No body really seems to want to give resort collections the time of day these days but me- I like them. Or at least the concept. I would love to spent my post-Christmas season somewhere hot, like Peru. Which is why the few resort collections that have stood out to me this time around, are the few that demonstrate fun sunny prints.

Tory Burch

Missoni

Balenciaga

Stella McCartney

I know that these prints aren't cohesive but I really like them and they really bring about a sense of glamorous relaxation. A lot of the collections I have seen really just make me think of women going away to a mental institution in Connecticut for the month of January.

Plus, everyone knows my "penchant" for prints. Sigh.

Photos courtesy of style.com.

PS: I stumbled across This Is Glamorous blog and I think I am about to waste away my afternoon because there is SO much to see there. I just love to look. If I could legitimately have a solid style, this would be it. Not too over the top glitzy, just classy enough where people look and say "Damn, that girl is pulled together." But I just bought Teva's yesterday so I'm not sure that's going to happen for awhile.

DELIGHTING IN HIDDEN SURPRISES

I was sitting at the pharmacy reading this months issue (???) of SHAPE and flipped to their fashion "editorial" and noticed that the model had a word tattoo on the inside of her arm of one of my favorite movie quotes ever:

"You're so cool."

It's from True Romance, a wonderful Quentin Tarantino movie. She thought Value Village was a smelly place but would occasionally humor my 15 year old self and take me there. As I grew up I became more fashionable and better skilled at thrifting and suddenly my mom realized I was scoring $8 cashmere sweaters and killer unique finds like my pink fringed cowboy boots.

Suddenly my mom got into the thrift scene. Lately her favorite things to look for are furniture but today she presented me with a $5 gift. Of a vintage brown leather Coach bag.

-pause for reaction-

Yes, it's missing a zipper pull but that's it.

Move over eggplant super-steal, mommy has a new best friend.

Everything about this bag is exactly what I love. Especially the "handbag" qualities.

My eggplant tote was getting a little roomy lately anyway, this down-size will hold everything nicely.

Pretty brass details!

I'm so excited that I think I'm going to transfer all my stuff over right now and not worry about the zipper for the time-being.

Also this article about American Apparel's employment policies is interesting. I found it on Go Fug Yourself's Friday Fugs and Pieces post and posted it on Facebook and it was then reposted twice so far by friends of mine and it's gotten some interesting responses.

At first I was pretty shocked but then I realized that high end boutiques probably do the same exact thing I do not want to compare American Apparel and Prada but frankly it's the same idea. They are a selling a very specific look and their employees need to emulate that look as best as possible.

I wouldn't want to work at American Apparel but I think the only reason this seems like such a big deal is because originally American Apparel was widely accessible and not quite as "classy" as it's appeared to become. Just because they produce their products inside the USA for legal minimum wage doesn't mean they're saints.

American Apparel's employees are just as much models as the scantily clad women in their ads. Sure they probably do some dirty, underhanded things but most big companies do.

I don't shop at AA because I can't afford to but I don't think I will boycott them just because they're picky about who is representing their company.

Food for thought...

SEWING THINGS

Yesterday I tried my hand at hand sewing a little. I have the book Generation T: 108 Way to Transform a T-shirt and I've done some of the no-sew projects in the book but I decided I really wanted to do their mullet T-shirt project. So I whipped out a whipstich. It went really well and wasn't too time consuming. It

(Note: this isn't an OUTFIT, I just threw the shirt on to photograph it. Also- it took me forever to get the shot I wanted... just so you know).

I like wearing it with a lacey black bra. I think it's a little edgy in an 80's way but not too tacky. Not as tacky as going braless would be. It reminds me of Carrie Bradshaw. In the first SATC movie she did a lot of backless tops/dresses with black lacey bras.

Here is what the front looks like:

It's my friend's band T-shirt, Black Market Revue. I got it for free so I decided it was a good candidate to hack up and make sexy-if-possible. They're a mix of soul, funk, blues and rock. They do a lot of gigs in the PNW, check them out if you feel so inclined.

It's a little cold but I would wear it to one of their shows. Or out at night or to a party maybe. I love the ribcage effect. The technique to make it is somewhat complicated and you should just buy the book if you're that intrigued by it.

Verdict: sewing is not as difficult or annoying as I thought it was, especially when it doesn't have to be pretty!

PS: Get more T-shirt I've given up the job hunt for this evening in exchange for torturing myself with clothes I can't have.

1. I've been pretty down for a striped T for awhile now I just haven't really found one I like yet. This one from the Gap looks perfect but I have my eye on a few at F21.

2. I don't wear many hats and especially shied away from them when the fedora phase was going on but I'm so down with straw Panama hats right now. The jury is still out as to whether I could pull them off but maybe with a low bun?

3. I was back and forth on a denim jacket for awhile but it's a good seasonal transition piece and I adore the idea of denim imitating leather

4. This is the greatest color for a pair of silk shorts and while they're very difficult to find cheap I still think they're amazingly luxurious.

5. WOODEN WEDGES. as;lfsalfslafj the best compliment to a nice pedicure. These are what I am lusting after so hard right now.

DETAILS IN DETAIL

I've been quite busy and strapped for time lately because of school but I did get a chance to upload a few photos of some random details in my room that I had kind of forgotten about.

I found this bag at a Value Village. How depressing.

And all I seem to have been acquiring lately is skirt after skirt and dress after dress which is very frustrating. I run out of shirts to wear but I have countless skirts available and temping me in the closet that I CAN'T WEAR TO REHEARSAL. The nice weather hasn't helped either.

But today I told my cello- "NO. You will NOT be my sole form of self-expression today!" I think it gets jealous of my wardrobe. So I wore a new dress.

I love this dress for many, many reasons.

1. it was $6
2. the fabric is sooo soft
3. it has buttons down the front which is my new favorite feature of dresses and skirts
4. it has a sweetheart neckline
5. the print is so damn cute

Not really a fan of it paired with leggings/tank but it was so cold. Can't wait until it's summer and I can wear it with my blue belt and yellow wedges :)

Red plaid Keds, meh. It worked I guess. And I did get complimented on them.

My favorite photo of a print so far! My 50 mm lens is so great for taking shots like this. It's also great for portraits...

But just look how cute that is! The perfect amount of detail!

On a semi-separate note, last weekend my mom was in town so I humored her by checking out some antique stores around/near Ellensburg and as it turns out now that I'm older I actually ENJOY antique stores.

The ones in this area have some especially cool stuff and the one that is in downtown Ellensburg (the name which eludes me currently) had a nice selection of vintage clothing; something I never thought I would run across in Kittitas county.

But if you're looking for a massive selection, many different lots/estates and maybe some pumpkin butter, I highly recommend Thorp Fruit and Antique-Mall. There was only a small clothing selection but just so much to see. Lot's of a old tool and Western paraphernalia. And everything was very justly priced. Plus they have some awesome farm fresh products on the ground floor. I bought a delicious black cherry lemonade.

The Sign that you can't miss going east on I-90. Exit 101! Courtesy of my cell phone.

A hat I really liked in the Antique-Mall. Also courtesy of my cell phone.

I feel as that I will only truly love Ellensburg/Kittitas County/Eastern Washington once I am far, far away. And that is okay by me.

CONVERTING THE HIDEOUS

I was in Good Will on Sunday and saw a shirt of this print.

(like my bird? I thought a horizontal photo was boring). Anyway, the shirt is a very over-sized size 12 or something. Just massive. And polyester. Let me show you,

To give you an idea of just how large this shirt is, realize that the hanger is normal-sized.

I have nothing against large, size 12 shirts but as Stacey London would say: "that's a lot of print" (actually, who knows if she ever said that but I feel as though that's a point she would touch on while evaluating a What Not To wear contestant's pre-makeover outfit) (is that show still on the air?) /end tangent

I walked past the shirt a few more times before I remembered this link. Yes, the dress-shirt-to-skirt trick.

I snatched the shirt and gave it whirl. Brilliant. Way better than a mens shirt because 1. it's a fabric that provides a better drape than cotton (the typical mens shirt fabric of choice) (but please, no one light a cigarette next to me) and 2. it has a kick-ass skirt print.

Observe:

The arms might appear obvious since you already know it was a shirt but I don't think anyone would be able to tell on the street. But when you look at it long enough I guess it does kind of look like my skirt is literally hugging my vag. Hm... oh well nothing a little messing with won't fix. Pair that with these (ha, I wish) and a black tank... you're so good to go.

Love it. Also scored an amazing cute dress but that's for later.

LOVE YOU SO SO SO

I'm in a lovey mood. Look don't touch, Molly.

I like this headband.

Such motherfucking rock star pants.

When I get some money I'm going to buy some studs in bulk from Studs and Spikes.com and just pretty much apply them to everything I own. Who wears lace body suits?!

And why do you wear then in tree? With oxfords and lacy ankle socks? Weird...

anyway,

I really want their new lace petticoat. But $70 is just too much. American Apparel never has sales (and hence my, and everyone else's excitement when their stuff showed up on HauteLook) and they're just so damn pricey. I DO enjoy their multi-pack deals though, and I think some day I might take advantage of their Flex Fleece zip hoodie 2fer $64 deal. You save $14 or something like that. While I'm at it I should probably buy a 3-pack of unitards... duh. -eye roll-

Sometimes AA is just so ridiculous but I can't lie, I like the simplicity of their stuff (mostly) (even if you have to be have the figure of a 12-year-old boy to look good in their stuff).

I love how long it stays light outside these days.

And here are two nice photos of my sister, to end the day properly:

LAUGHING OVER THE WEEKEND

Emily came to visit me this weekend and we had a Grand Ol' Time.

Friday night was spent relaxing with some TV and movies and junk food. I like this font.

I have the shopping bug, which is terrible because I don't really have money to spend. But this morning I checked my e-mail to discover Haute Look was having an American Apparel sale.

I usually can't afford Haute Look's sales because they're all designer and even though they're great deals I still can't justify the costs which is probably a good thing but 50%-off AA is a really great deal and in my price range to I caved and bought something.

Everything was being snatched up left and right or on hold and I didn't have time to wait around because I had class but I take the opportunity to buy a boring ribbed cap sleeve T in black for $13 (57% off!) At least it's a useful addition to my wardrobe.

ALMOST bought the romper for $20 but I've sort of decided I don't want one anymore because as it turns out they've gained massive popularity in the last two months and that bores me.

I guess the moral of the story is sometimes Haute Look has good deals.

LOVING LIMEADE

Today I discovered an abundance of Simply Limeade at the store!

Limeade is my favorite drink ever. So refreshing. It's always what I order at the Agua Verde Paddle Club, aka my favorite place to go to eat during the summer- ever.

If you're ever in Seattle (or live here) I HIGHLY recommend it because aside from being a cafe, you can rent kayaks there! And they uses phrases like "festive salsa cart!"

It's set on Portage Bay and they have a few really cool-sounding trips you can make. I really like kayaking so I'm hoping I'll take advantage of it this summer. On the weekdays you can rent a single kayak for two hours for $25.

They also have a pretty good happy hour menu.

I just had to share because I love limeade so much.

BITCHIN' BRACELETS

I just really wanted to showcase this gorgeous beaded bracelet my mom got me for my birthday back in January.

I don't know where she got it but I love the color and the way it looks as though it's tied together in a knot.

PICKING OUT SHOES

Check out my nasty blister from my Liz Claiborne's!

Not the most comfortable shoes, but very dependable and they go with nearly everything. More for the sake of my parents than anything. For any of you that don't know the significance of these mugs allow me to enlighten you. New York delis and street carts sell- and have sold for years now- coffee and you receive it in on of these cups, paper of course. Since the rise of Starbucks you see these less frequently (apparently) and so for former New Yorkers of my parents' age the cups themselves are rather iconic. Hey- Dan Humphrey drinks deli coffee on Gossip Girl!

The New York First Company's Modern Art NY Coffee Cup set of 2 for $24

A very, incredibly clever spin on another old classic. I CAN'T AFFORD TO -HEART- NEW YORK. I love it, I just wish I could figure out how to buy it! (The website, while creative, is massively confusing) but I think it's hilariously true.

Cello interlude...

This is the last movement of the concerto I'm playing this year/performing at the end of this quarter (with piano, not orchestra) for jury-ing up to 200 level performance classes. It's difficult but definitely coming along! I need to up my speed a bit, I think haha.

And my favorite New York city related song- New York I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down by LCD SOUNDSYSTEM. It's so lyrically amazing. It's about New York city turning into a Disneyland from the hardcore gritty city it once was.

ACQUIRING THE UNNECESSARY

I went shopping anticipating acquiring some of the items in the previous post and I did not do that.

I did acquire some prints though!

Pretty pretty! I don't eat meat except for seafood and I don't eat seafood while in school because being on a meal plan 1. there isn't much choice 2. it's not worth eating. BUT... I plan on eating meat again this summer after I get out of school.

"If you're already planning on it, why not just start now?"

Two reasons. One is that if I get sick I don't want to deal with it here at school during school, and the second being that it's a fairly significant moment for me (though it make not seem like it) and there are some specific people I want to share it with. And I want my dad to cook for me. :)

That being said, I have seven more weeks to wait and I have the most intense meat cravings right now so I think it might be a good time to share some meat-centric recipes I want to try and even better- their photographs. Gotta plan out Molly's Return To Meat 2010!

Pot roast... roast beef in general. Espcially when cooked in the crock pot... yum.

A BLT. Holy shit this by far my favorite sandwich in the entire universe. The best one I ever had was from The Hot Biscuit Diner in Ticonderoga, NY. Going to be on the look out for a good one of those this summer.

Pork roast and mashed potatoes. A meal that brings together my dad's and my own two best skills in the kitchen. My dad's being the ability to roast meat to perfection and mine being to ability to create the world's best mashed potatoes. This pork loin recipe looks like a keeper.

I'm also very much looking forward to ethnic food I'll be able to eat again! Like Piroshky Piroshky! Serving "pirozhki". So delicious.

my own spectra polaroid from ...2007?

And check out the authentic Chinese menu at my favorite Chinese restaurant in Seattle- Chiang's Gourmet on Lake City Way. Yum.

Lamb gyros from Mr. Gyro, Dick's Deluxe, Kosher hotdogs... my mouth is watering right now with the possibilities. Summer in the city never tasted so good. Or hasn't since 2008 anyway.

My goal in my Return To Meat is to eat quality. Eat meat when it makes sense. I've learned that vegetarian meals are DELICIOUS. Especially when they're meant to be, like meatless dishes at Indian restaurants for example. Just because meat is an option doesn't mean you have to take it.

On a related note, tonight Cassie and Casey and I made Muddy Buddies!

nom nom nom

And finally a quick rant about Cat Trax, the coffee stands at Central that take meal plan dollars. THERE IS NO REASON FOR THERE TO BE ESPRESSO GROUNDS IN MY GOD DAMN AMERICANO. Seriously, this isn't an outrageous request.

OH, and some YouTube just for fun... Lady Gaga's Telephone video and a legitimately funny and well-done parody!

THINGS I HAVE AND DON'T HAVE

The other day I was thrifting around with Cassie in the Goodwill and was surprised to find that the cute cotton minidress from the 90's that I had brought into the fitting room with me was actually a romper. Go figure. I'm semi-interested in rompers and I sort of regret not buying that one but alas the shorts were far too voluminous to NOT be confused for a dress 90% of the time, which would be annoying and probably result in confused stares.

However I'm somewhat interested in procuring a romper.

Pros to rompers:

they're comfy!
they're flattering?
they're simple
they're charming
YOU CAN ROMP AROUND!

Cons to rompers:

bathroom visits
that hipster stigma
they make you look like you're six, esp. paired with Saltwater Sandals which is totally what I would pair a romper with

My ideal romper would be a solid color or small print, 100% cotton, with straps of some kind and NO hood.

I like this Fishbowl printed romper from Nordstrom but I also really like the pockets in the Piqué Cross-Front Jumper from American Apparel. It's a little short in the inseam, though... I remember seeing a Vera volunteer/intern/something wearing one at CHBP '08 and had a safety pin holding the V-neck closed and PG haha.

Another thing I really want is a pair of Swedish Hasbeens, Peep toe High in red. I've traveled to Sweden before and I managed to somehow not be aware of these magnificent shoes until now (they're all the rage in the fashion blogging scene). If I had bought a pair in Sweden I could have saved myself shipping but now I am stuck in the US and they are tres expensive. I love all things Swedish; I'm definitely going to somehow have to track a pair down. Or better yet... pay Stockholm another visit...

Swedish Hasbeens, Peep toe High in red

I really wish I had taken more/better photos when I traveled to Europe. I'm sure I'll get another chance. The following was taken from my hotel in Stockholm. We visited in the summer during the midnight sun. It was amazing.

Swedish sky

And now for a musical interlude! Because oh right- I am a musician working towards a music degree...

The above is Carmina Burana the symphony and choirs are doing this at Benaroya in Seattle on May 22nd! Very excited! This YouTube vid is funny because they used Mozart for the picture but it wasn't even close to being written by Mozart.

JUSTIFYING COSTS

Wants needs and LUSTS FOR... I have managed to project these feelings (bahaha...) onto a certain pair of shoes (for now...) Jessica Bennett 'Myrtle' Wedge Sandal in milk/black.

Let me tell you a little story. A few months ago I was in my most-frequented shoe store DSW and I was scouring the clearance room when I came across what I like to refer to as The Shoes That Got Away.

They were wooden wedges with cutouts in the heel just like these JB's but as I recall these ones were Nine West. They were all-black leather with a thick ankle strap with a rather large buckle. I even had multiple cell phone pics of these beauties at one point. And did I mention they were on clearance?! And I'm pretty sure I had a $10-off coupon too... I can't remember how much they would've been but probably a steal.

I hemmed and hawed over whether or not to purchase for quite awhile. I walked around in them, took them off, and then put them back on to walk around some more. I knew I wouldn't wear them daily but certainly when I was feeling sassy! Which is more often that I realize.

I finally asked for my 15 year old sister's advice and she advised against it, so I didn't buy them. I took them off one last time and put them back in the box and walked away. Well, what a POOR CHOICE THAT WAS, HM?

ANYWAY- the other day I was browsing Nordstrom online and came across Myrtle and instantly I was in love (again). I don't know what it is about wooden wedges but I adore them. I'm not even a big fan of platforms, but something about walking on wood... I don't know. It's glamorous.

I really love to buy these and then wear them with everything short of my pajamas but truthful though I could afford them I just can't justify such a frivolous expenditure. :\ sigh. For now I guess I'll just lust from afar.

Right now my ass hurts so I need to get up and stretch and eat some chocolate. Sweet dreams, shoe-whores.

CREATING ENTERTAINMENT

sources: friend's photo stolen off of Facebook, Photoshop CS3

It's true.

FINDING HIDDEN MEANINGS

I found this really cool video (see bottom of post). Actually, it's not THAT cool but I like the concept. And these stills I have are sort of a cool concept for a tattoo, I think.

I'm not a very big fan of music-inspired tattoos though. Most of them are over-done and boring. This type is particularly obnoxious and lame. (I'm pretty sure I know at least two people with this exact tattoo).

Now THIS tattoo is fucking bad ass. (It's Beethoven as a fox... duh). If I didn't object to getting other people's faces tattooed on my body I would totally get this image of Beethoven tatt'd on me. (haha, I just said "tatt'd"...) But I have this feeling that having other people's faces on your body (permanently) could lead to some awkward naked situations.

I don't know if I'll ever actually get a tattoo. But while I'm at it here is another favorite tattoo-inspiring photos and just one of my favorite photos in general. For the longest time I thought I would want this as a tattoo after I got my BM but then I decided too many people have it (surprisingly?) and that I have this weird indentation in my back (from birth) that would make it look kind of strange.

A very famous photo by Man Ray. Supposedly the first doctored/"photoshopped" photo. As in, those F-holes aren't actually tattooed on that woman. I'm sure he took her portrait and looked at the photo and though "Goddamn she has amazing curves. Just like a cello. ... Hmmm..."

Anyway, here's that video I was talking about:

Birds on the Wires from Jarbas Agnelli on Vimeo.

BIRDIES!

MAKING APOLOGIES

I should just make a quick apology for any photos that go missing. I have a bad habit of just direct-linking photos of merchandise off a Google images and other consumer websites and I forget that sometimes those stores stop carrying those products and then take the images down from their server and then I have a caption of nothing. It's just because I'm lazy. Anything I find on a blog I host myself and credit... and it's rare that I'd do that anyway. So yes, that is that. If anyone has any issues with anything, let me know, I'm quite friendly.

BUT this blog is about sharing though so I must share something with you all and that is Clifford The Spice Girls manager in the movie Spice World, my favorite VHS of all time.

Look at that green douppioni silk suit! (Basically, I don't have a mens button up shirt on my hands at the moment).

I might just have to try it out the next time I'm thrifting and then if it looks good snag some awesome colors and contemplate doing a little scissor work to them.

I could see major summer potential for a skirt like that (so long as I wasn't playing cello). It's versatile, there is variation and I BET that they're comfortable. And hopefully flattering... and probably good for running errands in.

And in a parting note, I really want to get me some long leather gloves and I think spring/summer would be a good time to shop for them since I can likely track down some sales.

Catherine of www.seecreatures.com, one of my favorite blogs

(my usual new-quarter goals of productivity are already waning as I continue putting off my music theory homework)

P.S. I think it can be clever and very aesthetically pleasing. Christian Louboutin illustrated this very well with his Zoupi shoe.

And many other designers have put forth some great piece with zipper detail. It tends to be more interesting when they are used in accessories such as shoes and bags and jewelry, but putting them into unexpected places on dresses is always nice.

But god damnit, unexpected does not equal "unzip me". That's not clever at all! In fact I am a firm believer that decorative zippers should NOT be functional zippers. Which is why...

I HATE FULL-LENGTH ZIPPER DRESSES.

Loath entirely.

I think they are really unbelievably tacky. Like... really.

Allow me to provide you with some examples. The following four dresses and three skirts are currently being sold on Forever21.com. There are plenty more where these came from, so if you're in the market for a new dress or skirt for your night job, head on over.*

Exhibit A: This is just plain skanky. It says "Hey, want some?" I think the rouching is the worst, though.

Exhibit B: First of all, I was under the impression that shiny denim stayed firmly put in 2002. Second of all, I disapprove of visible cups on anything that isn't an undergarment.

Exhibit C: I'm pretty sure this one was called 'The Bra Dress' on the website. Zipper in attempt to make a romantic print look edgy. Nice try. No cigar.

Exhibit D: This dress COULD have been cute without the damn zipper but for some reason someone though it was a good visual addition...

Exhibit E: Because the studs on this skirt were not enough hardware. Then again too much is never enough at F21.

Exhibit F: Once again, tulip skirts are great but the zipper just completely ruins the shape.

Exhibit G: And finally, I don't understand why this zipper is SO long yet does not go down to the bottom... if you're going to suck at least go all out.

Right now these dresses appear to be all the rage at sorority functions. I've seen a lot of them popping up on Facebook. One girl even belted her zipper dress with a triple-buckle belt. It was like Battle of Garment Fasteners!

In conclusion, zippers are wonderful. They make things in life easier. One of my best friend's boyfriend wears strictly Levi 501s and let's just say she's gotten real good at unbuttoning. But creative is classy and full length zippers- ESPECIALLY down the front- are neither creative NOR classy.

*Full disclosure, I love Forever 21. I'm just not at all surprised they would sell tacky dresses, ha.

EVALUATING ESSENTIALS

I have spent the last 20 minutes or so consulting many lists of '[#] Items Every Woman Should Have In Her Closet' and I have come to a general consensus of 10.

>white oxford button up
>a cashmere sweater (cardigan)
>jeans of a dark wash that fit
>black pants
>a black [pencil] skirt
>a coat that goes with (nearly) everything
>a little black dress
>an everyday bag
>black heels
>bras that fit*

Honestly, you could make a wardrobe out of that. Just look at Michael Kors. He's a famous fashion designer but you will never find him in anything but jeans, a black blazer and a black T-shirt.

This is not to say that women should not own a scarf, or flats, or a T-shirt, it's just if you're going to invest money in something these are items I believe need investing in.

For staple items I highly, highly recommend J Crew.

click through for the original size

Yes, these nine items from J Crew will cost you just over $1500. Not many people are willing to spend that much. Especially us ladies in college, who should probably own these items more than anyone. But their products are well made and definitely worth the money. But money is tight. So since I know *I* won't be going out any time soon to the nearest J Crew and dropping my savings account on these things I have some general advice for those of us still in need.

AHEM:

You can find the classic white shirt just about anywhere. Your key is to make sure it is cotton (with maybe a tiny bit of Lycra for stretch). And also? IRON. Ironing will make all the difference because nothing looks worse than a wrinkled dress shirt.

---

A cashmere sweater is something you really can't buy cheap. They will all cost upwards of $100 (unless you get lucky at thrifts stores as I have -wink-). However, owning a cardigan is important because they're so useful. They're light-weight and go with everything from jeans to dresses to skirts to shorts.

Old Navy has plenty of cotton cardigans that serve the same purpose as a cashmere one. Such as this 60% cotton 40% Modal belted boyfriend cardigan for $28. (Modal is the most interest fabric ever, I'm dying to try it out).

www.oldnavy.com

---

Properly fitting jeans are not easy to find. I definitely don't have a whole lot of recommendations on where to find them because I, myself, have been struggling for years now to find jeans that fit me (I have short legs). Where you buy them will greatly depend on your body type.

I think that in terms of saving money on jeans your best bet is to track down a pair that fit and then try and hunt down some savings. I suggest starting at RetailMeNot which is a website that helps you by pointing out sales and also promo codes. It saved me almost $8 on my American Apparel hoodie. Also, sometimes if you call the store itself they will be able to tell you what their upcoming sales are.

---

Here is where I sing the praises of a tailor. Tailors are amazing people that will make you look amazing. To anyone living in the Greater Seattle area, I recommend Yuri on 205th and Highway 99 behind Top Tattoo. He does excellent work at an AWESOME price. His shop seems a little shady but I assure you this man is fantastic.

The point is if you're going to invest in black pants they should FIT you. Properly. This means no puckering around the crotch and they should be the appropriate length for whatever sort of shoe you plan to wear most frequently with them. Also, the sign of a quality pair of dress pants? Lining. Easiest way to determine if they are worth the price.

Generally you'll find black pants in some sort of a blend, often with polyester which is fine. A blend is more forgiving for all seasons and that is definitely a plus if you're intending on getting your moneys worth. I recommend The Gap for well-made trousers at half the price of J Crew.

---

Now is another instance where I will not a show a picture because photos of black pencil skirts are boring to look at. It's the same deal as the pants though. Assume it will be a blend and make sure it fits correctly. You can find BPS at pretty much any department store for also half the price of the J Crew one. And why a pencil skirt, specifically? Well because they universally flattering, that's why.

---

A coat that goes with everything is a little more tricky, unfortunately. I love my wool LL Bean coat with Thinsulate but it's definitely much too warm to wear it in the spring. It's a late-fall/winter coat. The trench I showed in the J Crew picture is much more effective for spring because it's lighter (obviously...).

Here is a little secret, it doesn't have to be a pea coat. Everyone thinks pea coats are the greatest thing since sex-standing-up but sometimes they hurt more than help (like sex-standing-up). A double-breasted coat is rather unflattering to women with larger chests because it will just emphasize it. And not in the good way.

You will probably need to spend over $100 on a coat if you want something that will last but that financial decision will actually save you money (and probably keep you warmer) because it will prevent you from having to replace your coats every single season.

ModCloth offers a lot of relatively inexpensive options for "basic" coats in addition to some amazing statement coats.

You'll notice most of these are blends and that is very typical.

---

My opinions on the LBD is this: pick a dress that is flattering and just stick with it. If you have a large chest steer clear of halter and lean toward strapless or thicker straps. If you have bigger hips get something with a fitted skirt. If you're shorter avoid really full skirts that start at the waste because they will shorten your torso. In general if you know how to dress for your body type you can find yourself a lovely LBD.

My LBD is a really simple tube dress from F21. Nothing special but useful in the correct context. I'm very interested in purchasing this Interlock Asymmetrical Dress from American Apparel for $42.

www.americanapparel.com

Okay, so this post is fucking long and since I have about five trillion things to say about bags and shoes I am going to save it for another day. And I need to shower and study anyway and this post has spanned over two days now. So enjoy my "wisdom" and come back again soon for some more.

*Bras that fit will also be an entirely different post since it is such a ricockulously humongous topic.

BROWSING ON ETSY

Today I want to show Etsy some love. Go to Etsy, typing in a keyword that relates to them and usually you'll be returned with some awesome homemade items that make for original and creative gifts.

Here is a little list of items on Etsy that refer to some of my favorite things in the world.

Lady Gaga Greeting Cards

You have no idea how fucking excited I would be to get a letter in the mail and open it to see Lady Gaga's face on it. Even if unintentionally!

DELIGHTING OVER ANIMALS

I love animals. At college, I am deprived of animals. I live in a valley where animal life finds it hard to exist and I we all live in non-animal-friendly housing. When I see someone walking their dog I go a little crazy and I'll usually ask if I can pet it. It is no wonder that I like animal-inspired clothing. Animals are gorgeous so it is fitting that humans would aspire to look like them.

I have a major affinity for cheetah/leopard prints (everything I own...) but we all know that's not the most inspired animal look out there so for the sake of my sanity and originality I left it out today.

[click the 500x500 to see the 840x840]

Alright, so here it is. Now let's evaluate.

1. The Kindness Dress from ModCloth, currently out of stock. Great simplicity. The swans have little yellow beaks!

2. Jane Aldridge from Sea of Shoes, one of my favorite fashion blogs. I'm not sure I would ever wear a full fur coat, because in Seattle it is just so frowned upon and I wouldn't want to risk someone throwing something at me. But maybe a fur collar... I just love red furs, like fox. This photo is so luxurious and the fur matches her hair!

3. A sweater from Irina Shabayeva's fall 2010 collection. Some amazing feather-inspired outerwear. Check it out here.

4. An adorable cat-printed clutch from Miu Miu Spring 2010. Giving "animal print" a whole new meaning. Probably one of the best spring collections out this season; this whimsical collection is filled with cats, birds and Jack Russell Terriers.

5. A dress by Daniel Field and Wesley Nault of WesFeld made for a Plastics Make It Possible contest (oh yes, they won). The details (and more photos) can be found here. Inspired by two pretty weird creatures, the trilobite and the seahorse. I really love inspiration that comes from not-your-everyday animals.

6. A little dress from Zac Posen pre-fall 2010. The way this bunny print was done was completely genius.

7. Again from ModCloth, grey peacock feather tights. They also come in blue.

8. No need for a link because everyone knows about the famous Marc Jacob's mouse flat. The ones shown here are from way back in 2006 but if I'm correct they are still being re-designed and produced today. All I know is that I NEED these shoes.

9. A horseshoe crab pin. Yeah, that's a horseshoe crab meant to be worn as jewelry. Designed and made by Hanna Bernhard, husband and wife team. Jane from Sea of Shoes did a whole post on some of their pieces which include a prawn, a squid and a octopus among others.

I am not off to go do something productive for the first time this morning! Have a good weekend, everyone.

These are the only animals I ever see in Ellensburg. But at least quails are super-cute!

DISPLAYING CLOTHES I LOVE

I definitely own some go-to items that I probably wear way too often but the reason I wear them way too often is because their great! So here are 10 items I own that I love, ordered from head to toe.

Forever 21 Clubmaster Sunglasses

Okay, so the sad fact is that I no longer actually own these. I bought them in tortoiseshell last spring and at one point they broke (well, a screw came loose) and I actually took apart a different pair of sunglasses to fix them and then they broke again. But I wore these glasses ALL summer. I wish they were still selling them in tortoiseshell. The thing about sunglasses from F21 is that they are cheap (and hence, break) but my sunglasses are so abused that to pay good money for a pair would be a stupid decision on my part so I just buy the knockoffs for $5. Also, they you can buy more styles and have more options which is always fun.

purple buffalo check flannel button up

Unfortunately this is the best picture I have of this shirt (I left my D80 in Seattle) and gee, my face looks really red. I thrifted this shirt from Value Village and never looked back. It was already extremely soft and worn in when I bought and now it's even better. I wear this probably three times a week. I can rock it open or buttoned up (somewhat...) or I can belt it. I've even deigned to wear this with leggings (don't worry, only inside the house). And the color?! I could not have gotten any luckier with this find.

Forever 21 Fab V-Neck

I really love things that I can get in multiple colors. Because if I like it I can get five more of them and wear it five times as often. These shirts are the greatest. They're better than Hanes white V-neck T's because for one, they're way cheaper at $3.50 a T and! They come in more than 20 different colors! Forever 21 is an overwhelming store and usually these T's are just placed in random parts of the store, some on hangers and some folded. I usually get a size medium for a relaxed fit (I've learned that the small is REALLY tight). Oh, and they're really easy to accessorize.

American Apparel FlexFleece Hoodie

Here is a trend that is very prevalent in Seattle... I'm pretty sure at UW orientation every student receives one of these in their goodie bag. That would actually be really awesome because they're damn expensive on a college student budget ($42) but it was definitely worth it. Another example of things that come in many colors. (I love unique items just as much but it's easier to get photos of these things online than it is to photograph my unique finds). I'm actually wearing mine right now in Sea Blue (the color above). I ordered a small and it fits like a mens small. My sister got an extra-small and she can actually fit her hooded sweatshirts underneath it but then again she's a twig. This is just a good staple item. They're perfect for a mild climate (like Seattle) and you can just throw them on. I actually wear it over my purple flannel just to be a super-hipster sometimes. Worth the money, for sure.

Old Navy Button-Shoulder Sweater

I have to give Old Navy some credit. They have some good deals (it's why I bought two of these sweaters) you just have to know what is worth buying. Acrylic sweaters? Not worth the money, but this baby is 100% cotton. I have it in this yellow w/gray stripes color and in gray w/white stripes. It's soft, it doesn't pill too bad, it didn't shrink in the wash and it came in a relaxed fit (I bought a small and it was not tight at all). The buttons are the cutest part and the perfect detail for a sweater. Old Navy is definitely good for stocking up on specific things, such as cotton sweaters like these (and obviously flip flops).

Victoria's Secret 'Lacie' thong

Many women will speak of the wonder of Victoria's Secret and I have to agree, they are my favorite place to splurge on panties. And with such enticing sales, it's hard not to. The Lacie line is usually always on sale- 3/$30. I have these in three colors that I'm not even sure they're selling anymore (based on what I can see online). They're ridiculously comfortable and oh-so-sexy. Highly recommended.

Minnetonka suede Kiltie Moccasin

I bought mine at a DSW (www.dsw.com) in July of 2008 and I have worn them probably 75% of my 2010 winter quarter. They took no time at all to break in and they literally go with everything, dresses, skirts, boot-cut jeans, skinny jeans, straight-leg jeans. You can wear them with or without socks and they just last forever. I just discovered today that Nordstrom is selling them in purple now and as soon as I have some extra money I will be snagging a new pair because these are definitely shoes I will always want in my closet. And who has purple moccasins?!

Birkenstock Gizeh

As a Seattleite, I am required to own a pair a Birkenstocks, it's just a contract we signed... I happen to own two pairs. One is in the traditional two-strap Arizona style but the other pair is in this awesome T-strap Gizeh style! Despite the fact that this style cannot be worn with socks, I cannot get enough of these sandals. They work out great since I'm going to school on the east side because they're ridiculously comfortable to walk in and perfect for the warmer spring weather. These shoes are extra-special to me because I got them on sale at DSW (again). I am also really craving these in the purple patent leather variety.

Acorn vegan fleece socks

My mom bought my sister and me these socks for Christmas this last year, two pairs each. Mine are in hot pink and this blueish/pink paisley print. Talk about incredible... I wear them either in the house when it's cold or in my rain-boots, otherwise they won't really fit into shoes (well, maybe hiking boots or something) but it hardly matters because they just so great. When I was searching these up I discovered that the Acorn website sells them in cheetah print as shown above (that's my trademark pattern, you should see my dorm room) and I immediately added them to my "To Buy Once I Actually Have Money" list.

pink fringed cowgirl boots

Once again I must apologize for this bad photo, it's just a really crappy angle because I took it myself while I was wearing them. I got these for $6 at a thrift store. They're easy to pull off in Seattle but in Ellenburg (AKA Rodeo City) it's harder to wear them without looking like I'm actually a part of the rodeo. However, they are delightful anyway and definitely something I would've worn at age 5. I have a little gray jersey dress that they look very cute with but they also work fine over skinny jeans. Just a "unique find" that I couldn't pass up.

TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE PALM PIXI.

I currently am the holder of Palm Centro. I have been for about 13 months, now.

I love this phone.

My Cento has certainly taken a beating. I'm a clumsy, drunken college student. It has many-a battle wound. It still has it's stylus though, I'm proud to say. However, it's probably nearing it's last legs. A friend of mine has one and it all of the "big" buttons have fallen off. Today we discussed our newest must-have:

The Palm Pixi.

"The Pixi is basically the spiritual successor to the Centro." -Dieter Bohn of PreCentral.net

It is soon coming to Verizon (January 25, 2010) and many of us Palm fans are ecstatic. Unlike the Centro, however, Verizon users are required to buy a data plan with the activation of the Pixi Plus or the Pre Plus (also coming to Verizon).

My friend is not very happy with this and my sister opted out entirely. However, it is a SmartPhone and WebOS phone. That is what it is for. The web interface on the Centro is incredibly subpar which I can tell you without even having it.

After having the Centro I decided I would never go back to a phone without a touchscreen. I basically only use the touchscreen on my phone. It's not a very large screen but it makes all the difference. I also decided (a long time ago) that I never wanted a phone with a horizontal physical keyboard, this includes the Motorola Android. (However there is many a reason why I do not care for the Droid).

I am not one of those 19 year old college students who goes into Verizon, man-handles a few display phones and then makes a choice. I do serious research which means consulting blog after blog after blog of reviews.

The cons that are coming up most frequently are the crappy camera quality (especially compared to its older brother, the Pre), a dim screen (also in comparison to the Pre), and a cramped keyboard (which is supposedly lightyears better than the Centro and I love the Centro keyboard).

The comparison between The Centro and Pixi is night and fucking day. Everything about the Pixi makes my phone look like a children's toy. Especially its interface.

If I end up deciding on the Pixi, as I said before, it would require a data plan. That data plan is $30/month. Which is $360/year which is about a month's work at my summer job. (That sentence sounded ridiculous). I think it's worth it because if there is really no where to go but "up" with my phone then I am looking at a data plan.

Which brings me to my next point, if I am paying $30/month for unlimited internet then should I consider a higher smart phone? Well, it's certainly something to consider. It would behoove me to check out a phone like HTC's Android Eris (the feminine answer to Motorola's Android) or Palm's own Pre both of which have gotten mixed reviews. However, we'll save that discussion for a later date.

I guess what really just sold me on the Pixi was its commercials utilizing Passion Pit's song "Sleepy Head", the most fun-loving song in the world.

So that, my friends, is that.

I really like this photo, haha, it's probably the essence of a Pixi user: snarky phone and unidentifiable coffee.
